Campaign Description

After spending the past few months of the school year at home, this summer, many children are facing the prospect of spending much of their summer at home too. With COVID-19 continuing to affect the lives of everyone around the world, parents have fewer options for entertaining their kids - many summer favourites like community programs, sports leagues and summer camps are unable to operate or will be operating with limited capacity. That's why this summer, Something Gained Theatre Co. is offering totally virtual, no-contact theatre camps for kids! Something Gained Theatre Company is a brand-new theatre company based in Edmonton. We are made up of recent graduates from MacEwan University’'s Theatre Arts program. The end of our year was eclipsed by the pandemic, so we understand how everything feels a bit less fun right now. That is why we feel bringing some levity to the world, especially to children, is so very important right now. And we want to do that the best way we know how - through the magic of theatre! There are two camps to choose from: the week-long Theatre Fundamentals camp, or the one-day Puppetry camp. Each camp is 1.5 hours long per day, offering activities and education focused on live theatre. The camps are geared towards children between the ages of 8-11. Children will learn new methods for unleashing their creativity and will end the camp with a simple presentation to demonstrate what they've learned. The camps will run every week from the beginning of July until school starts back in September. If we exceed our funding goal, we will adapt our camps into an after-school program for the school year. When you choose to boost our campaign, you are also buying a free camp for a child. For every $75 donated, we will give away a spot at our week-long camp. We will be reaching out to agencies that work with families in need to extend these free camps to vulnerable children. If you wish to enroll your own child in our camps, we have that covered too! Simply pick the camp you want from our list of rewards, donate the proper amount, and we'll enroll your child in the camp of your choice!

Our Story

We had the idea to start a theatre company back in October 2019, but it was only through confronting our new reality of living through an international health crisis that we decided to take the plunge. We were initially going to name our company  “Atmosphere Theatre,” and we would focus on producing new works in an intimate setting. But as students in a pandemic, we recognized how difficult it was to transition to online learning and to stay inspired. Since we understood the struggle of adapting to our own schooling, we realized that it must be even more distressing to be young and unable to learn with the same shared energy and joy as before. We noticed that there was a void to be filled: inspiring children through the joy of theatre. So we shifted our focus to cultivating the good and gaining something wonderful.

We are something Gained Theatre Co. The Co-Founders, Aidan Spila and Abigail LaForest, are lifelong students of theatre and recent graduates of Macewan’s Theatre Arts program. They have a shared passion for theatre creation and are enthusiastic about extending their love for theatre to all audiences. We understand how hard this pandemic has been, especially for young ones. That’s why we are offering virtual theatre camps! Donating $75 pays for a child to attend a fun, week-long theatre education. Our summer camps teach some of the foundational skills for acting in theatre - creating movement, building characters, exploring the voice, and fostering creativity and playfulness, all in a space where children’s ideas are embraced.

Meet the Team

Aidan Spila

Aidan Spila

Co-Artistic Director

Aidan Spila is an actor born and raised in Edmonton. Having just finished his studies at MacEwan, he is very excited to get going with his theatre company- something he's dreamed of for a long time. Between entertaining his little brother, babysitting at family gatherings, and his work on multiple children's theatre projects, Aidan very much enjoys helping children embrace their creativity. He understands how boring life can be nowadays, and is hopeful he'll be able to use this project as a forum to exercise his theatre skills in a way that impacts children in a positive, educational way.

FAQs

How is the money from ATB Boostr used for this project?

All the proceeds from this campaign go towards tuition for these camps, allowing us to give away some spots in our classes for free! This money pays our three project artists, and secures any needed materials, allowing them to devote their full attention to delivering these classes.

What are the qualifications of the people engaging with the children?

Every one of our camp educators is a life long, passionate theatre artist. Each one of us also has plenty of experience in children's theatre, summer camps, or both! We have also performed all necessary background checks, for peace of mind.

Do children need to know lots about theatre to participate in this camp?

Not at all! Our camp only requires the most basic understanding of the concept of acting to begin- we introduce all the other stuff ourselves!

Are there any materials or other preparations needed to participate in these camps?

The preparations needed to participate are as minimal as we could make them. Children need to have comfy clothes and room to move, some water, and a device capable of video conferencing on Zoom. Certain days of the camp require more specific preparations, like printing/writing out a script, or gathering some fun toys or clothing pieces from home to use as props. Our weekend puppetry camp makes use of a printable puppet template, but if use of a printer is not viable, a sock puppet does just fine!

Is this a "learn through play" type of camp, or a virtual lecture?

Our camp is as much learn-through-play as we could make it! But we do include plenty of valuable discussions about our concepts and exercises, encouraging the children to share their thoughts.

What is the age range for these camps?

We recommend our camps to children between the ages of 8-11, but a couple years younger or older is totally fine too!
