Campaign Description

Our affordable program is for EVERYONE who wants the accessibility to a wellness program designed to improve a person's physical strength, flexibility and mobility, while also providing strategies for calming the nervous system, brain and body. The result of this is an increased overall improvement of physically and mentally well-being.

Removing barriers of accessibility for people with Physical and Neurological conditions

My mother was diagnosed with Progressive Multiple Sclerosis when she was 34 and I was a teenager.  She went from a very active woman to being in a wheelchair within a very short period of time.  She had MS for 30 years and went through many challenges during that time.  As the disease progressed her mobility decreased, she suffered multiple strokes and seizures from her medications, experienced speech problems, depression, developed severe arthritis and experienced a lot of pain, weakness and immobility.  During the last 5 years of my mom's illness she was quadriplegic with very limited mobility.  As someone who loved my mom dearly, I often felt unable to help her.  As a result, I became a Fitness Instructor, worked as a Nurse's Aide in Long Term Care and then became a Yoga Therapist as I wanted to learn how to help people like my mom. I understood their many challenges physically, financially and emtionally and wanted to find a solution to support them.  My passion for helping people like my mom grew and as a result I started working more and more with people with Physical and Neurological conditions.

Then the Pandemic hit!

Then the pandemic hit, I wanted to do my part to help out.  Since the beginning of the Pandemic I had been offering up to 10 free online live Yoga classes through zoom.  I reached out to the MS society and other organizations as I was able to offer live online Specialized Adaptive Yoga, Meditation and Breathwork classes to those who needed something a little different.  I realized that through zoom, I could reach people with my Specialized Adaptive classes in their own home, at their own pace and capacity.  Thus, removing the barriers of accessibility that existed prior to the Pandemic.  The MS society did a story about the free live classes I was offering and the experience I had with my mom at the end of April,  as a result many people in the MS community started attending the classes.   In addition, members of other communities have been attending with such conditions as Parkinson's, Autism, FASD, Depression, Anxiety and those recovering from Cancer.

Changing Lives

Due to the overwhelming positive response to my offering, I realized that a more permanent solution was needed to provide people with a wide variety of Adaptive Yoga, Meditation, Breathwork, Strength and Fitness online live and taped classes.  On a daily basis, people in my classes are sharing how these classes were changing their lives; mentally, physically and emotionally, not only by doing the classes but in the sense of community that was being created as a result of these live classes.  People who have never done Yoga before found that they could do the class, those who had to give up Yoga due to their diagnosis found they now could do it again, individuals were expressing on a daily basis how they felt calmer, happier, stronger and more mobile.  It was truly inspiring to hear their successes and positive experiences.  These individuals now felt they could take an empowered and active step forward in their physical and mental health and wellbeing that they felt they couldn't before.

Moving forward I have been working on finding a more permanent solution.  I am in the process of trying to launch a Specialized Adaptive Therapy Studio starting Tuesday September 1st, 2020 with a wide variety of taped and live options for those who wish to access them from the comfort and convenience of their own home.

Empowered, Supported and Proactive!

I believe anyone can do Yoga and Fitness! You need no experience. In these Specialized Adaptive classes there are lots of modifications given for each pose and exercise, whether a person is doing the class from the floor, in the chair, or in a standing position (depending on the class).  In addition, learning and doing the breathwork alone can have a huge impact on calming the nervous system, the brain and the body, hence the whole body and mind operates and functions better. Providing individuals with tools, confidence and coping strategies they may have not had previously.

I have chosen to launch a Rewards Crowdfunding campaign to help launch this studio through the ATB Business BoostR.  I am needing to raise a minimum of $4,000 to help purchase the tools and equipment needed as well as provide a variety of classes while keeping the membership cost low for those who wish to participate.  The Rewards I am offering largely discounted memberships to this studio (as low as $16.67 per household per month) thus removing financial barriers while still offering quality and accessible classes.

What others are saying.....

I started Yoga 15 years ago, Yoga was highly recommended by my Neurologist.  In the last several years due to my MS it has been increasingly difficult for me to get out to the classes, especially in the winter.  I have spent many dollars on classes I couldn’t do, tried programs on DVD, but because of my limitations, I found that I couldn’t keep up for classes that were meant for the masses until now.  Sarah’s classes are adaptable to all ability levels.  She has an ability to teach a class of individuals with many different needs.  We also benefit from the sense of community and belonging that so many of us lose because the abilities this diagnosis takes from us.  This program not only addresses physical health but mental health and wellbeing.

I started doing Yoga in 2010 but due to the spasticity in my legs I was not able to do the standing yoga positions and couldn’t find a consistent long-term class for people with limited abilities until Sarah came along.  Sarah has so many different options for each pose that I am able to do a whole class whether it’s a good or bad day.  It has been wonderful to be back doing yoga!  My legs are getting stronger, less spasticity and more flexibility with each class.  Thanks to Sarah I’m getting back a part of me that I lost a long time ago.  She is helping people from Newfoundland to British Columbia who are in need, mentally and physically, of exercise and companionship with others who understand them and their challenges.

Doing yoga classes with Sarah has been an amazing experience for my 13 year old daughter with FASD. She is patient and her teaching methods were easy for her to understand and follow. My daughter always feels calm and grounded after the classes.   In the past, it was difficult to get my daughter to engage in any fitness activities due to her high anxiety. Sarah’s online format gives my daughter the ability to take the classes in the comfort of her bedroom, and turn her video off if she chooses to. She doesn’t feel the pressure of other people watching and is able to participate in the class in a way that is perfect for her needs.

To work in any capacity with individuals with special needs, specifically Autism Spectrum Disorder, one must possess a special quality in their character.  This person must be able to identify the level of need and how to best serve those needs.  Sarah Robson-Bily excels in this capacity.  I know this because she works with my two adult children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.   She has exceeded my expectations as an instructor in dealing with my son's needs.  No matter the level of ability, she makes yoga achievable for everybody.  She demonstrates alternative methods to approach each pose depending on the individual’s skill level.  Sarah draws out progress and success from each and every client, making yoga and wellness accessible for all. My sons are less anxious, more focused and healthier for it.

Her mother didn't have access to resources to help her in her recovery and manageability of her conditions. As a result, Sarah wanted to help those like her mom have access to a health and wellness program in the comfort and convenience of their own home.  She is able to provide modifications to each pose whether an individual is approaching the class from the floor, the chair or from the wall.

She believes EVERYONE can do YOGA and Fitness.  It's a matter of finding out where a person is at then providing them with modifications and options that work for them.  She has witnessed many people who thought they couldn't do it, not only DO IT but thrive as they take an active role in their health and wellness! The people Sarah works with are her biggest heros as they contiue to overcome the challenges in their lives.  This is the driver for Sarah as she attempts to bring Yoga and Fitness to more people through an Adaptive Specialized Online Yoga and Fitness Studio.

Client Resource Liaison

A message from Erin our Client Resource Liaison:

I am mother of two adult children who were both diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder nearly 20 years ago.  While we’ve experienced some good resource growth over the last two decades some gaps remain.  Autism can create isolation for families, particularly when you factor in behavioral or sensory challenges.  Up until approximately five years ago attempting any sort of extracurricular activity in the typical brick and mortar establishment was next to impossible for my family.  Until now there have been no programs like Adaptive Therapy available.

“So, what’s so special about this Adaptive Therapy platform?”, you may ask.  It brings the yoga and fitness classes to the individuals.   It eliminates all of the stress and anxiety involved in just packing up leaving the home – at least it does for mine.   My sons settle in quickly for their virtual yoga class and truly enjoy their time spent with Sarah during yoga.  They have become much less anxious, stronger and more flexible as a result.  They have access to a live instructor and one who has a true gift for working with individuals with extraordinary needs.  As the Client Liaison Resource, I want to be able to provide support those individuals and families who come on board to this innovative and specialized therapy studio.  TOGETHER WE CAN!

FAQs

What is an ATB BoostR Campaign?

ATB BoostR is a rewards based crowdfunding program that ATB Finacial (Alberta Treasury Branch is a financial institution and Crown corporation owned by the Province of Alberta) launched in 2015. It is a platform that offers Alberta Entrepreneurs a place to pre-sell a product, service or experience. This is typically an ‘all or nothing’ model, which means that a business owner has 30-45 days to reach their crowdfunding goal. However, with the COVID-19 relief program, we have removed the ‘all or nothing’ model. This means when a business comes to the platform to create a campaign, whatever money they raise, they get to keep—even if it’s less than their goal. Businesses can sell existing inventory, pre-sell products, future experiences or services, gift cards or receive donations.

What is Rewards based crowdfunding and how does it work?

Rewards based crowdfunding is an ever growing, alternative source of funding for businesses. It’s also the most popular type of crowdfunding. Businesses create a campaign on the platform for a set amount of capital to be raised, and in return for donations, the business provides various rewards. Rewards can be substantial, or as simple as a virtual high five.

In supporting this campaign and purchasing a reward, is my credit card safe and payment method?

Yes, we use Stripe, a secure payment processor for all credit card information and payments. ATB BoostR does not store credit card information or share it with the business you fund on BoostR.
