Campaign Description

The QUILTBAG's physical store is currently closed due to public health guidelines around COVID-19. Like most small businesses, we still have ongoing operating costs despite the mandatory closures. We have been working hard to create new shopping options that maintain everyone's safety. We also want to give our amazing community a way to support us financially (besides continuing to shop) during this stressful time. Our funding goal of $5,000 will allow us to cover approximately 3 months of operating expenses so that we can keep offering queer & trans wares year-round.

The QB Story

The QUILTBAG is an LGBTQ+ retail shop carrying queer & trans wares in Edmonton. The shop carries an always changing assortment of custom and curated used & new clothing; accessories like pins, pronoun buttons, patches, stickers; art by local artists; small gifts; and trans gear.

The QUILTBAG is owned and operated by queer folks with a lot of love for Edmonton and a desire to contribute positively to the lives of others who live here. We realized Edmonton would benefit from an explicitly LGBTQ2S+ retail space where people could gather, host events, share art, and find new items to help express themselves. In December 2018, The QUILTBAG opened its doors for the first time with the help of many volunteers and early supporters. We want LGBTQ2S+ families, no matter how they’re made, to shine, and we believe artists should be able to make a living from their work. We’re excited to be helping to make a world where this is possible through the sale of rad goods.

We chose to include QUILTBAG in our name because it's a fun-to-say variation of the LGBTQ+ acronym. It stands for queer, questioning, unlabelled, intersex, lesbian, trans, two-spirit, bisexual, asexual, gay, genderqueer, and more. For some LGBTQ+ folks, seeing the term "QUILTBAG" is both a beacon and kind of a secret code. And for people who haven't heard the acronym before, it's a fun little surprise to learn about!

Local LGBTQ2S+ Artists

The QUILTBAG carries handmade work on consignment by over sixty LGBTQ2S+ artists from Edmonton or who have a connection to the city. (Photo to the left shows only a few people out of many more!)

These amazing artists create a wide range of goods including art prints, original visual art, pottery, handsewn fashions, knits, embroidery, accessories (pins, stickers, patches!), leatherwork, beadwork, jewelry, bath products, candles, poetry, zines, books, and more.

A few of our consignors are full-time professional artists, but most of them create in their spare time as a labour of love - the shop provides a way for them to sell their work at fair prices to customers who love queer & trans art!

The selection of wares by LGBTQ2S+ artists and makers is always changing and most of the pieces are handmade and unique, or feature original designs and artwork.

We are incredibly proud to work with this lineup of creative, passionate people. The QUILTBAG is driven by connections to community, and these artists make our world go 'round!!

Queer & Trans Wares

When we first decided to open The QUILTBAG in 2018, lots of people asked us "What will an LGBTQ+ retail shop carry?" Almost two years later, it's very clear to us and our customers that we're doing something a bit unique and also very needed.

Whether it's clothing, art, pride swag, or specialized trans gear, everyone deserves an affirming and supportive place to shop for stuff that makes us feel good - that makes us feel like ourselves. This is a shop by and for queer and trans people, plus the people who love and support LGBTQ+ communities and believe in a world where everyone is accepted and celebrated for being who we are.

We love meeting people of all ages who visit us on their own, in pairs or in groups with friends, partners, and family members. Each and every interaction shows us that what we're doing is important. It's the everyday experiences that show us what community is all about! We're committed to keeping those connections strong and bringing queer & trans wares to Edmonton through whatever curveballs come our way.
