We are all navigating uncharted waters. Every day looks different and brings new emotions – sometimes confusion and frustration, sometimes gratitude. It is a confusing time.
At Silvera, we are working hard to protect our residents’ physical and mental health.
We can’t do this alone.
Supporting residents
With each passing day, our concern for resident’s mental well-being grows as a result of social isolation. Our Active Aging team has introduced activity carts that invite residents to choose activities they can do in their suites. In addition, we would like to increase our stock of technology, such as iPads or tablets, so residents can digitally connect with their families and friends.
While most older adults prefer face-to-face interaction, geographic and mobility barriers often prevent such interactions from occurring regularly. Video conferencing technologies, such as FaceTime or Skype, have demonstrated the ability to enhance levels of connectedness. Studies show that only five minutes of weekly video conferencing interaction with family can alleviate depressive symptoms and loneliness for residents. Researchers have also found that video conference programs have a long-term effect in alleviating depressive symptoms and loneliness for elderly residents in various living communities.
It’s all about building community within community for Calgary seniors – that’s our promise.
For more than 55 years, Silvera for Seniors has provided safe, affordable seniors housing for 1,450 lower-income Calgary seniors from all walks of life.
Our 25 communities are located in all quadrants of the city. Through our communities we offer independent living with a range of support options, from basic to enhanced services, for lower-income seniors. We recognize that all people are individuals, and we work to create vibrant communities that residents can call home. We work with partners across Calgary to enhance the services and supports we provide.
