Campaign Description

The Silver Skate Festival is turning 30 years old in February 2020 and we need your support! We are an iconic event that all Edmontonians can be proud of. Rooted in Dutch winter traditions, the festival combines sport (especially skating), arts and culture, culinary, and recreation. The Silver Skate Festival is Edmonton’s the longest running winter festival. Over the years, it has grown in leaps and bounds, from a small skating event to a large-scale, winter extravaganza. Attendance has increased annually, and we anticipate exceeding 120,000 visitors in 2020. This success comes at a price as our biggest accomplishment is our biggest challenge. We are so incredibly grateful to our Edmonton Community in working with us to create some incredible incentives to help support the Silver Skate Festival. With Christmas just around the corner we are sure you could find something different for that hard to buy for person.

Humble Beginnings

As a FREE festival It is hard to believe that we have been celebrating Winter for over 30 years. We harken back to our humble beginnings when the Dutch Canadian Club would come down with an Orienteering Tent and a deep fryer to prepare Kroket and hold Speed Skating races on the Hawrelak Pond.  In June 1990 the Silver Skate Festival Society was formed and we haven't looked back.  We have grown from a weekend sporting event to a 10 day Winter Extravaganza with a diverse and eclectic program celebrating everying that is great about Winter in Alberta. 
Our physical footprint for the festival has more than quadrupled and the site development costs inherent to a winter festival are a significant part of our budget.  Securing additional funding through this ATB Boostr would enable the Silver Skate Festival additional financial stability to hire more artists, musicians, performers and staff.  So that we can keep on “Creating Winter Experiences” for you for years to come!
In just 12 short years what was a 3 day event with 5000 visitors has become a 10 day Winter Festival that attracts over 100,000 people. The Silver Skate Festival takes great pride showcasing the amazing things that Edmonton has to offer. 

 

Why we need your help

The Silver Skate festival is an iconic event that Edmonton can be proud of and now we are here asking for your help.  Yes, the Silver Skate Festival is FREE for all to enjoy and we are very proud to have an amazing group of volunteers.  (250+ Volunteers every year donate over 2000+ hours) to help us facilitate the Festival.  The Silver Skate Festival still has plenty of hard costs.   

As a festival we rely on grants from all levels of Government and some incredible Community Partnerships with our local business community.  Unfortunately our funding is not growing as quickly as our audience and we are hoping that by doing this ATB Boostr we will raise additional funds to help with these costs, help us diversify and increase our programming. and help us so that we will be here for the next 30 years!

Let's face it, Winter is probably one of our longest seasons and we work very hard to find a variety of ways to celebrate it.  We are askng for your help so that the Silver Skate Festival can keep on showcasing everything that we have to offer.

Erin has been a part of the Silver Skate Festival for the last 12 years and has been the Executive Producer for the last 8 years. She wears many hats at Silver Skate and is responsible for ensuring our success through fundraising, grant writing, community partnerships, marketing, programming, hiring of staff and volunteers.  A big believer in community she loves being able to showcase and support Edmonton at our festival. Erin feels incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to present and highlight the incredible artistic community that live here. She prides herself on working with and supporting local businesses with her work at Silver Skate. A huge Winter advocate Erin truly believes that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad dress.
