Our Story

Hi! My name is Alex Carnio and I am the Founder and Lead Consultant behind Simplified Social. Thank you so much for visiting our ATB BoostR page.  I wanted to take this time to share a little bit about myself and how Simplified Social and SocialU got started.

How it All Began

I never thought I would ever be an entrepreneur. After graduating with my Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Management, my passion was in business planning and consulting, so after graduation, I accepted a position with Alberta Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) where I acted as their Start-Up Programs Facilitator and toured the Province of Alberta facilitating hundreds of sessions on Business Planning, Are you Ready for Entrepreneurship? and some basic marketing courses.

I have always been passionate about social media, but as many of you know, social media today is not what it was 10 years ago. I was always the first to volunteer to make a Facebook group for my work or volunteer role and was very active on Twitter from the very beginning. In 2013, I started volunteering actively for Startup Canada, which is actually how I first found out about AWE.

As I continued to work at AWE, I supported their marketing department with social media while continuing to facilitate my sessions for start-up programs. As the sessions went on, I kept having more and more questions asked about social media for business, which I always included as a section in my marketing portion of the business plan workshop. This was always my favourite part of the session, and it showed. My workshop participants would always come up to me after the workshop and ask if AWE would host additional sessions or ask if they could book additional advising time with me to discuss their social media accounts.

Soon, I began developing curriculum for social media workshops and the next thing you knew, I had countless requests from entrepreneurs to manage their own accounts. It was overwhelming and I knew I had a choice to make! 

The Next Chapter

In 2016, I decided to move on from my role with AWE (Simplified Social still continues to support them with their social media to this day. If you are a woman entrepreneur in Alberta, you need to check them out. Their resources are affordable and invaluable!). I had a brief stint as the Digital Marketing Manager at West Edmonton Mall where I had the opportunity to run the social media for the largest mall in North America. It was a great learning experience, but unfortunately not the right fit for me.

From there, I continued to grow Simplified Social while working on various contracts including content writing for Alberta Pensions Services in-between.

In May 2018, I reached a fork in the road. I was working full-time on contract work and spending my evenings and weekends on Simplified Social. I was burnt out and had to make a decision. I was either going to fully commit to this side hustle I had poured my soul into for the last three years or I would accept a full-time government position and move forward.

I chose entrepreneurship and I haven't looked back since!

Where We are at Today 

Two weeks after deciding to leave my comfortable, well paying government contract, I found out I was pregnant. Nothing like the universe pushing you out of your comfort zone, right?

I am happy to look back and say it was all for the best. Since May 2018 we have added three employees and two contractors to our team. We now have an office space and have been able to work with over 100 unique clients since my humble beginnings back in 2015. 

SocialU is the next chapter for Simplified Social. I have worked with so many entrepreneurs and organizations that I truly believe that we know what you need to know. Sure, you can hire us to do the work for you, but at the bare minimum, knowing how to do the basics yourself will make you feel more confident so that if you do end up hiring someone down the road to help you, you feel more empowered in your decision.

Social media is always changing. What Facebook is today is not what Facebook was last year. Our curriculum has been developed, re-developed and tested to audiences across Alberta over the last three years. We are proud to partner with We Know Training here in Edmonton to bring this unique training platform to life. Each course has a series of modules that will leave you feeling empowered to take your social media to the next level. We are here for you every step of the way and can't wait to share this next chapter of our business with you!

Alex Carnio

Founder

Alex is the Founder and Lead Strategist behind Simplified Social. In every job she’s had, social media was a task she always volunteered to manage because she loved it so much. She never imagined that it could end up being her full-time career. Prior to starting Simplified Social in late 2015, Alex worked for organizations including Alberta Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) and West Edmonton Mall. While at AWE, Alex worked as their Program Facilitator and Marketing Manager, where she trained over 1500 entrepreneurs on business plan writing, marketing and social media. It was in this period that Alex realized there was a significant knowledge gap and sense of overwhelm when it came to business owners and social media. After countless asks from entrepreneurs wanting her to take on their social accounts, Alex decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship officially. In Alex's "spare time" she enjoys spending time with her family that consists of her husband Chris, daughter Leighton, two dogs, Hudson and George.

When will I be able to start taking my SocialU courses?

We are planning to launch our SocialU courses on July 20, 2020.

Do I need to take all of the courses or can I just take one?

No! You do not need to take all of the courses. You can take one or take them all. The choice is yours.

Why should I take courses from SocialU?

The SocialU courses were developed by the team at Simplified Social who have trained thousands of entrepreneurs over the last six years on social media for business. We firmly believe that we know what you need to know. The courses are practical and give you the knowledge you need to know. No fluff.

Who is Simplified Social?

Simplified Social is an Edmonton-based social media agency. We have worked with many organizations on their social media accounts. Our true specialties include content creation, social media management and social media training.

How does the social media brand video reward work?

We have partnered with Adam Hutlet Films for a limited number of rewards. The brand video shoot will be happening at a set location on a set date. The film will be for a specified time length that is agreed upon when purchasing your reward.

How do I access my SocialU courses?

Once you have purchased your SocialU course rewards, our team will be in touch with how to gain access to our platform once we are ready for launch. We are working with the very reputable, We Know Training based out of Edmonton to develop our training system. Our platform includes customer support to ensure that you never have any issues accessing your courses!

How long do I have to complete my SocialU courses?

Your SocialU reward purchased through ATB BoostR is redeemable for one year of launch date. This means that you have until July 20, 2021 to complete your courses.
