FAQs

What are the top priorities of the project?

The project priority is to develop reliable, fast-to-manufacture ICU ventilator units that can be delivered urgently.

How is Respiratus different that all the other emergency ventilators I have seen on the news and social media?

  • Respiratus patent pending design does not use a bag and has a closed loop control system with sensors and actuators incorporated and it has redundancy and safety features built in.
  • Respiratus is an ICU ventilator and its specifications are comparable to those of GE, Grager and Maquet units commonly used across Canada.
  • Respiratus is design so that it can be sold and be used in the hospitals even after the Pandemic is over and can be manufactured in large quantities quickly.

How is Sentient going to make this happen in a matter of weeks?

  1. We did a lot of up front work. We researched other existing ventilators and captured what our front line professionals are used to. We assured we can meet all Mandatory Requirements for Ventilators announced by the Government of Canada. We designed with supply chain in mind. Most components are manufactured locally and less off the shelf parts are used. The materials used for manufacturing are easily accessible even during the pandemic. We have already confirmed with the suppliers of few purchased parts for large quantity supplies;
  2. We partnered with Fidelity who has worked with us through many R&D projects and provides fast turn around and 100% inspection;
  3. We partnered with IMBiotechnologies Ltd. who has experienced with Class 4 certifications of medical devices (which is a higher level of certification needed compared to ventilators being Class 3). We are putting together all the documentation and will be ready to submit a complete application as soon as we have the testing completed. Health Canada is having an interim order in place and will get back to us in 3-5 days;
  4. The engineers involved have multiple areas of expertise and work together closely (with social distance in between them of course!). The great communication and understanding of how every element of the system works together allows us to continue work on all segments of the development in parallel resulting in rapid prototyping;
  5. Sentient prototypes are different. We take on custom design from the onset and get manufacturing and suppliers involved, so the prototype is only one or two minor revisions away from the product to be delivered. How we do it is what we learned with years of experience in the research and product development field; and finally
  6. We engineer the complexity of the solution in the background to provide a sophisticated simple solution. Simplicity in design is the essence of rapid manufacturing and reliability.

Why?

  • With the global crisis, there is no higher calling than the fight against COVID-19. We are passionate in delivering quality solutions no matter what the challenge.
  • As Canadian engineering and manufacturing companies, we have established our reputation to deliver simple high-quality solutions to complex problems on-schedule, every time. It is important to be able to create solutions locally, now more than ever, with the limitations put in place on export by other countries. Made in Canada will always be accessible in Canada.
  • Alberta is facing significant economic challenges with the crashing oil prices and the impacts of the pandemic, we believe that by pursuing this project, we will be able to provide good meaningful opportunities to the community as well as contributing to diversifying Alberta industries. There is a huge pool of talent in manufacturing and leading-edge technologies in Alberta, and these skills are transferable. Let's utilize the Canadian talent.

How much does a typical ICU ventilator cost?

The standard of care in hospitals intensive care units (ICU) use ventilators that cost $30,000 to $40,000 CAD.

How much does Respiratus ventilator cost?

Our target price for the delivered complete unit is $19,000 CAD each for the initial low quantity run (200 units), and $12,000 CAD each for the mass-produced units (1000+ units).
