Campaign Description

We make it ten times easier for neighbours to save money on making their homes better. Our team is a grassroots group of students and innovators; we're inviting you to join in on the startup rodeo. Boost our cause, and make it your own by sharing feedback on the prototype (available on the Apple and iOS Store). The $10,000 raised from this campaign will go towards the creation of Beaverlodge 2.0, an app so simple and practical that 5 minutes/week will save you over $50/month and build a roadmap to reduce emissions by 50%.

Our Prototyping Process

Our Product Vision

Why This Campaign?

Why is a tech company doing a crowdfunding campaign? That question has several answers, but the essence is that we are too excited not to. We think what we are working on could change the world for the better, and because our product has community as its core, we want to share the adventure of building it with the community. If we’re throwing a party, we want a big one.

It might not be the perfect next step in the bible of tech startups, but we’re crowdfunding because it’s authentic to our particular business idea. If we can’t be authentic with ourselves and what we are building; our day-to-day work would become torture. Over 12 people have joined our team because it's something we are passionate about, and think it could be a pretty big deal. Here are a few more strategic reasons why a crowdfunding campaign makes sense.

The first key reason is that we are a Business-to-Consumer service. In Alberta, most tech startups are focused on selling to businesses. Selling to consumers has traditionally been “resigned” to big companies from out East or the US (although great initiatives like Harvest Ventures are changing this). But good business is always about solving problems, and we feel deeply about problems that average Albertans are experiencing. Raising funds directly from our customers (the public), is a great way to confirm that we are solving a problem they or their loved ones experience. The customer is king.

The second reason we are doing a crowdfunding campaign is because we are a little bit radical. Jeff Bezos (the founder of Amazon), frequently states that in the “long run” customer value and shareholder value are the same thing. Unfortunately the “long run” can take a very long time, so we are looking for ways to have more of our customers be our shareholders. While we cannot legally share “ownership” of the company in this crowdfunding campaign, distributed ownership is a key part of what we want to build. Maybe someday in the future that will be possible, but for now, rewards are the closest we can get. We want customers to be shareholders.

We’ve spoken to many angel investors and successful entrepreneurs. Most of them continue to be involved in the startup world not because they need the money, or because they need the friends, but because the thrill of starting something innovative is incredibly rewarding. Some have even described the rush like a hit of cocaine. We don’t think drugs are healthy, but getting a thrill from solving complex problems in the world, is probably pretty okay.

Our mission is simple; make it 10X easier for neighbours to collaborate with bulk discounts in optimizing their home.

Even though the internet can solve very complex problems, and the power to create connections like never before, we haven’t asked it to build the essence of the golden rule. Something humans naturally love to do; help neighbours solve each other's needs. Technology is giving us an opportunity to make it easy as a few taps on a screen.

So this campaign is our invitation to you to join in on that adventure. Come experience the thrill of something radically innovative being built from the ground up. Yeah  there are a thousand things that could go wrong, but that’s always what it’s like to start something new. Not unlike having a child, there are many ways they *could* turn out wrong. But bringing the right people on the team, who are loving and authentically vested in success, generates incredible rewards for a hard day’s work.

We’d love to have you as part of the team. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any specific questions.

Best Regards,

Tim Lipp

CEO - The Juggler

If a ball drops, it’s this guys fault. He can be a little sporadic at times, but that’s okay; we are building something that’s never been done before, so we have to test lots of ideas. It’s going to involve dropping a few balls in order to find the right cadence. He is responsible for setting the right big targets that everyone else is aiming for, and removing any roadblocks that are keeping them from getting there.

The Question That Started it All

"How Could Introverts Solve Climate Change?"

Starting in 2018, Tim asked that question to anyone who would listen. Partially inspired by the book Quiet: The Hidden Power of Introverts, partially because of frustration with how polarizing (and ineffective) activism can be.

We'll add more updates throughout the campaign, fell free to check out our company blog if you want to get more info on our thought process.

FAQs

What is the product?

Bob, Friedrich, Ormhel, Ghujpreet, and Claudia all live in the Neighbourhood of Temple. They all live in homes that were built in Calgary's "Boom" of the 1980's. They all need furnaces that are going to need to be replaced in the next 3 years. If they could somehow coordinate it, a furnace company will be able to give them a deal. Right now, they would have to be randomly talking at a block party about furnaces in order to figure this out. With Beaverlodge, they'd just spend a few minutes each week on the app, and our technology would do the rest. The app would ask them to simply "swipe" on products and answer questions, and they would get a discount in return. Not only for furnaces, but for the 100+ other things that contribute to an expensive utility bill.

Why Are you Doing This?

There are multiple reasons, everyone involved has their own unique ones. You will get to hear some of them in our updates.

  1. We are passionate souls that like to do stuff. Beaver's teeth will drive them crazy if they don't chew wood. Our brains will go crazy if we're just sitting on a couch watching Netflix.
  2. There are serious problems in the world (like climate change, broken neighbourhoods and overpriced stuff), we feel like heros for trying to solve them.
  3. We like to eat, party, and celebrate life. To do that you need money, we think this could help us earn money.

Maybe you have another reason. We'd love for you to join our "company" of passionate, heroic, and celebratory souls.

When did it start?

Beaverlodge was founded in November of 2019 because we believed in the idea. We had been doing research on it long before then. Three weeks after incorporating we won $25,000 in funding from the Trico Foundation. It's been a passionate adventure ever since.

How does the app work?

The current app uses a bunch of software, to give you a process like this:

  1. Download and sign into the app
  2. Answer 20 Questions about your house
  3. Respond to products you are interested in
    1. Respond to new products eventually
  4. Respond to actions you want to show your commitment to
    1. Update actions periodically
  5. Get emailed report that shows you how you can make improvments

Where is the app available?

Technichally anyone in Canada can use the app. But our grassroots team only has the capacity to support users in Calgary.

What is a beaverlodge?

The home where beaver families live! You can see the family that inspired our name in this video. One beaver even shows off a superpower only recently discovered! Aren't you proud to have such industrious animals as our national animal? Yes there was a great deal of damage (to nature and to Indigenous people) done in the past for Beaver's skins, but the story is over. We can choose to build something better every day.

What about my data and privacy?

We never collect the data to know where you live, only the postal code area. Additionally, all user data is encrypted and secure using top-of-the-line security measures. Data is only used for the purpose of giving you an accurate home rating, discounts on home upgrades, and to inspire the community with anonymous stories of impact.

How do you make money?

We started this out of a desire to make the world better. That being said, we want to make the world better for a long time! Which means we are building a viable business. The main way we do that is by taking a commission on the products we sell you. But we don't just pick products that make us lots of money if they are not helpful. If you think a product we have is garbage, please tell us!

How does the optimization work?

The app helps you optimize your home by pulling together three different elements into a single place. First, you answer 20 questions that give you an understanding of your home efficiency in conjunction with NRCan auditors. Second, the products in the app enable optimization at unbeatable prices. Third, the actions themselves help you reduce your utility bills.
