Campaign Description

Are you an eco-conscious urban gardener who is struck by the plight of native bee species? Are you interested in additional ways to compliment your bee friendly urban habitat for species such as bumblebees? Do you want to amplify the rewards that diverse pollinators bring to your flower bed or food garden?

Here at BEESHIP we are offering locally designed, locally made products, to help improve bee biodiversity in your yard. Our very first offering is called Bumbleship™, a unique ceramic sculpture that has been developed as an urban nesting habitat for bumblebees. When bumblebees are provided with more places to nest they will be more likely to stick around. With their constant presence, your garden will benefit from the fruits of their labour.

Who is BEESHIP?

BEESHIP is an eco-art initiative devoted to creating meaningful, practical, functional sculpture and public art in the service of native bee ecology. We are often asked, why bees? Native bees such as bumblebees play a crucial role in maintaining a positive quality of life for humans, through the act of pollination. On a personal note, we are enamoured by Earth’s biodiversity and emotionally invested in maintaining it for our children’s generation and beyond.

Why Make A Pledge?

We want to create eco-art products locally and sustainably: products made by our hands to enrich the landscape of your urban gardens and give city born native bees more places to live.  By supporting us you are helping us reach the goal of creating an interesting, local, and sustainable business model. So what’s in it for you? Well, check out some of the cool prizes we are offering!  A lot of these prizes have been sourced through local businesses in Calgary. We truly appreciate the help from old and new friends alike.

Our first product Bumbleship™ is ready to be plaster molded, cast in ceramic, fired in a kiln and shipped off to customers like you. The only problem is, we don’t have a kiln to do the firing. Since the pandemic has started, our options for using other peoples facilities have been limited and so have small business grants. So we’ve decided the best option is to develop our business from home, with a little boost from folks like you.

BEESHIP needs an electric kiln that can be installed in house, and some electrical upgrades to run that kiln, while also improving outlet capacity in our garage for production purposes. Please join us in developing a small local Calgary based business, with sustainability and eco-consciousness in mind. With YOUR help, we can make BEESHIP fly to new heights.

Media Attention

"The inspiration to build little ceramic homes for bees grew as McLernon delved deeper into what he calls an eco-methodology in his work, and his desire to use his art to help bees. He first approached the University of Calgary’s Office of Sustainability with some ideas, and from there Rachelle Haddock put him in touch with the Faculty of Environmental Design and with Dr. Ralph Cartar, PhD, an associate professor in biological sciences and a bumblebee specialist."

- Andrea Kingwell with the University of Calgary

"Natve bee species are on the decline in Alberta, but Calgary grad student is taking matters into his own hands by creating some tiny, sustinable bee habitats."

-Mary Gateneh with the Toronto Star

"It may look like a simple piece of art, but this right here, has the ability to make a stinging impact on the city."

-Britanny Rosen with CityTV Calgary

More About Bumbleship™

Bee A Conversation Starter

Do you envision your garden as a bumblebee highway? Are you an urban citizen-scientist or gardener who is developing your very own native bee oasis? Are you yearning for an aesthetically eye catching ceramic sculpture that ignites conversations with friends when they enter your yard? Perhaps you are intrigued to hear more about how a Bumbleship™ can be beneficial for urban dwelling bumblebees? Here are a few tidbits from our research.

Bee Affected

In his article The Aesthetic of Affect, Simon O’Sullivan points at the function of art:

to switch our intensive register, to reconnect us with the world. Art opens us up to the non-human universe that we are part of.

Bumbleship is a sculpture that offers a way for you to connect more deeply with your surroundings through a very personal act of developing the aesthetic in your yard. Through this aesthetic act, you are also opening up the possibility of developing a deeper connection to our little friends, bumblebees.

Bee Tough

There are many cute wooden bee houses currently on the market, aimed at attracting solitary bees or bumblebees. However, due to the harshness of Canadian weather, especially now because of climate change, these products deteriorate quickly, or require a lot of upkeep to maintain. We’ve tested our ceramic Bumbleship against wooden bee houses, and found that our product is highly weather resistant and durable. Bumbleship will provide you and bumblebees with many more years of hassle free service than wooden alternatives.

Bee Cool

As we are faced with more heat waves like the one in 2021, wooden bee houses will eventually be unsuitable as bumblebee habitats due to excess heat absorption. Bumblebees prefer to keep their nesting habitat at a temperature of around thirty-degrees celsius, which is optimal for the health of their colony. Not only does the choice of using ceramic as a material make Bumbleship weather resistant, the insulative properties of ceramic also makes it resistant to heat absorption.

During the summer of 2021 we tested the insulative properties of the early Bumbleship models and found that the external temperature of the ceramic sculpture was roughly ten-degrees celsius lower than wooden objects in the same location. When internal temperatures were taken, Bumbleship was up to five-degrees cooler than its external temperature. The first iteration of Bumbleship was cast with a very thin wall, and still provides better heat resistance than thicker walled wooden bumblebee houses. With heat regulation in mind, we plan to make the current version of Bumbleship have a wall that is at least three times thicker to improve its insulative qualities.

Bee Versatile

In Alberta there are twenty-nine different species of bumblebee. Most of Alberta’s bumblebees nest underground, in abandoned rodent dens. Meanwhile, a smaller portion of this bumblebee population is known to nest in trees, making their homes in holes formerly occupied by birds. Bumbleship is designed to function as a nesting habitat for tree dwelling and ground dwelling bumblebees living in urban spaces. It can be hung from a tree in shaded locations around your yard, or partially buried in the ground near your garden. When buried in the ground the entrance remains visually available for interested bumblebee queens and curious citizen-ecologists like you.

FAQs

What is eco-art?

"Ecological art is an art genre and artistic practice that seeks to preserve, remediate and/or vitalize the life forms, resources and ecology of Earth."

What are some of the advantages of Bumbleship™ design?

Bumblebees maintain a comfortable nest temperature of around thirty-degrees celcius. Ceramic is an insulator and does not absorb as much heat as wood or plastic. During the heat wave in 2021, external temperature readings of Bumbleship™ were around ten-degrees less than surrounding wooden objects and the internal temperature of the sculpture was about five-degrees less than the outside surface. The shape of Bumbleship™ is designed so when rain falls on the sculpture it is guided away from the entrance and air vents. A cool and dry environment is more preferable than a damp and hot one for bumblebees.

How many bumblebee species live in Alberta and where do they make their homes?

Did you know that there are twenty-nine bumblebee species in Alberta? The majority of these species nest underground in abandoned rodent holes. The other bumblebee species generally nest in tree holes, abandoned by birds. How many abandoned rodent holes or tree holes do you have in your yard?

Bumbleship™ is designed to function as a nesting habitat for tree dwelling and ground dwelling species of bumblebee living in urban spaces. It can be hung from a tree in shaded locations around your yard, or partially buried in the ground near your garden. When buried in the ground the entrance remains visually available for curious bumblebee queens and interested citizen-ecologists like you.

Why is the Bumbleship™ mold plug in the video so large? Will the ceramic sculpture be the same size?

During the process of drying and firing ceramic objects, they will often shrink 20% or more from their original size. This shrinkage is due to a loss of moisture in the ceramic and also a process called vitrification. The Bumbleship™ sculptures will be roughly 20% smaller than the mold plug you see in the video. We have accounted for shrinking ceramic to accommodate a size that is more functional for people and bumblebees. The approximate size of the finished sculpture will be 26cm in height (including lid and base) by 13cm in diameter.

Is a Bumbleship™ one or two pieces?

A Bumbleship™ is made up of a lid and base. The lid is designed as an entry way for bumblebees and provides both ventilation and temperature regulation. The base is where bumblebee queens will start and raise successful colonies. In late autumn, after the first frosty days, the lid can be removed to clean old nesting material and debris from the Bumbleship™ to prepare it for the following spring. The two piece design of Bumbleship™ also allows for the sculpture to be partially buried in the ground, to attract ground dwelling bumblebee species.
