Campaign Description

Help preserve the memory of the Graphic Arts Building! The City of Edmonton has decided to demolish the historic Graphic Arts Building to make way for future development. Green Violin is in the business of neighbourhood well-being. Part of that well-being is creating connection through a sense of place and history. As Edmonton continues to demolish historic buildings and erase history, Green Violin wishes to preserve the memory of buildings now gone by re-creating them in scale model form. The first building we wish to preserve a record of is the historic Graphic Arts Building, located along Jasper Avenue, on a once-vibrant block in the heart of Edmonton's downtown core. The models will be displayed in the Stanley A. Milner Library for future generations to get a glimpse into Edmonton's forgotten past. Historic buildings serve as a living memory of the foundation in which our cities are built.

The Graphic Arts Building is a Record of Who We Are!

Over the last several years, the future of the Graphic Arts Building has been uncertain. In 2015, the city of Edmonton purchased the building. At this time, they evaluated several different options including restoration on site, moving and restoring, or demolishing the building to make way for future development.

Ultimately it was decided that the building would be demolished. In 2021 Green Violin put forth a proposal to the City to move the building to a location in Chinatown to serve as a Chinatown museum and music venue. Early in 2022 we learned that the City had rejected our proposal.

It was at this time Green Violin began the journey of gathering a team to build an architectural model with the intent of displaying it  in a public space as a permanent record of this historic art deco building.

Our goal is to raise at least $16,000 to build the Graphic Arts model inclusive of both a massing model and high-fidelity replica. The proposed model will be displayed in the Stanley A. Milner Library. The model will sit on a pedestal which will house a time capsule containing records and objects from the building.

Please view our brochure below

Model Details

MASSING MODEL

Massing is a term used in architecture that refers to the perception of the general shape and form as well as the size of a building. This model includes little detail in the form of colour, material, etc.

HIGH-FIDELITY MODEL

This model will include details of the building as it stands, inclusive of both the interior and exterior.  This model will be 1/64 in scale, the largest of the two models.

*Artist rendering intended as concept only

Thank You For Your Donations!

This project wouldn’t be possible without he generosity of our donors. Thank you for considering becoming a part of The Graphic Arts Legacy. All donors will be commemorated on the donor list. Our intention is to preserve this list for future generations to discover upon the opening of the time capsule.

FAQs

Where will the model be displayed?

The model will be on display at the Stanley A. Milner Library downtown Edmonton.

When will the model be built?

We will commence building massing portion of the model as soon as we have raised $6000. The High-fidelity replica will be built once we have reached our minimum goal of $16,000.

Why is it important to preserve a record of the Graphic Arts Building?

The Graphic Arts building comes from a time that doesn't exist anymore. As we tear down historic buildings their memory and influence is lost with them. Additionally, this building is one of the last standing Art Deco zig-zag style buildings in North America.
