Campaign Description

In an effort to provide delicious and healthy snacks for people with food sensitivities, we have developed a gluten-free flour blend that we have put into a number of dry baking mixes. All of our mixes are gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free, nut-free and soy-free. We use certified organic ingredients in our mixes. We use certified organic coconut sugar as a sweetener as it is a healthier choice to cane sugar because it has a lower glycemic index and does not cause a sugar spike followed by a crash which is often the case with cane sugar. Coconut sugar has vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Dietitians and Nutritionists who have come across our mixes are impressed with the quality and nutritional value we offer. We are hoping that this BoostR campaign will help us raise sufficient funds to purchase ingredients; buy equipment; and possibly help us in acquiring our own facility where we produce and package our mixes. (Right now we are doing everything by hand which is hard work and time-consuming.) Having our own establishment will enable us to qualify for our own certifications in Organic and Gluten-free. (Presently we are renting a commercial kitchen which will not put us in a position to qualify for GF and Organic certifications.)

The Story of Gail's Worry Free Baking

How it Started

Until I was 26, I suffered with upset stomach, headaches, and pains in my muscles and joints.  No medical reason for my ailments could be found. It was just part of life for me.  My oldest daughter was four when she was diagnosed with food allergies. Her allergies included wheat, dairy, and worst of all, sugar.
 Something had to be done.  I didn’t want my little girl to be denied treats when others were enjoying them and because I wouldn’t have a treat in front of her I really missed my sweets and treats, too.  I started experimenting with gluten-free ingredients using some of my mom's recipes.  At first, most of the experiments were total flops that the garbage can got to enjoy.  Cakes felt like plasticine in my mouth. Muffins and cookies were dry, crumbly, and tasted awful.  I did, however, have some successes that weren't too bad. I also noticed my chronic muscle pains, headaches, and upset stomach disappeared. That, along with my successes, was enough to keep me going.

My Dream is Becoming Reality

Over 30 years of improving my recipes, I developed a gluten-free flour blend that worked with everything I baked. My blend obtained similar results to Mom’s fantastic baking that I grew up with. Cookies were soft and chewy. Cakes that were moist and delicious, as well as other amazing baked goods. Friends and family who have tried my gluten-free baking have been favorably impressed. They rave about the taste and texture of my baked goods.

With these types of reactions, my family has encouraged me to make the decision to bring these delightful taste experiences to others, especially those who, because of allergies or other medical reasons, cannot enjoy a piece of cake or have a cookie without suffering a negative reaction.

My Hope

It's my hope that you'll enjoy my gluten-free baking mixes - Discovering that you can finally again, enjoy delicious sweets and treats with my worry-free baking mixes. It’s especially fun to see reactions when we serve our baking to our friends and other people who aren’t food sensitive. They are very surprised.  Most of them comment that they can’t tell the difference.  Some even say that they like it better.

Kids Cancer Care

We have partnered with Kids Cancer Care in Calgary. Every summer there is a camp for kids with cancer and their siblings. They approached us last fall at the gluten-free expo in Calgary because were very impressed with the quality and taste of our samples. The camp directors have expressed a desire to have gluten-free menus as many of the children have dietary issues. Our gluten-free mixes fall within their dietary guidelines because they are egg, dairy, nut, and soy-free as well. We were asked if was possible to donate our mixes to help with the camp menu. At that time we didn't know if enough of a donation would be possible. 

This is dear to us as Nadine, co-partner in the business, has a grand-daughter who has beaten cancer and participates in the summer camp with her siblings. Now, with ATB BoostR, we feel confident we can help in a substantial way. 

We feel that offering one mix for every $25 contribution, as one of our rewards, is an excellent way to provide people an opportunity to help kids afflicted with cancer.

Kids Cancer Care programs are uniquely designed to meet the needs of the whole family at each stage of the cancer journey, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. The foundation helps Alberta children and families by providing funding and programs in these key areas: Camp and Outreach; Research and Hospital; and Education Support and Scholarship programs.

Today, Kids Cancer Care is one of the largest childhood cancer research funders in the country. The foundation now offers more than 20 year-round and summer camp and outreach programs, along with education support program and services to Alberta families. Kids Cancer Care is one of only a handful of charities in North America dedicated to supporting the entire continuum of childhood cancer, fighting the disease on all fronts, with laughter at camp, the best treatments at the hospital and innovative science in the lab and brighter futures through education support and post-secondary scholarships.

What is the nutritional value in GWFB mixes?

We have had dieticians and nutritionists stop at our booths as we have participated in Farmers Markets and Trade Shows. They have been favorably impressed with the ingredients used in our mixes. Why? We use coconut sugar, instead of white refined sugar. Coconut sugar has a glycemic index of 35 whereas the glycemic index of refined white sugar is 65.  Therefore, coconut sugar is more suitable for diabetics and those striving to eat healthier because it is a low glycemic index carbohydrate. Coconut sugar is released slowly into the bloodstream. Meaning it does not spike the blood glucose and insulin, like white table sugar does. The slower release also helps to avoid the sugar high or rush, followed by a crash. Coconut sugar can also satisfy a desire for something sweet without creating a mad craving where you just keep eating the sweet thing.

The nutritionists were also very impressed and surprised that our mixes contain a significant amount of fiber after looking at the nutritional label.

Our mixes are made with certified organic ingredients. We take pride thatThere are no additives, preservatives, colors or flavors in any our mixes. Thus, creating a healthier snack for everyone.

I was a stay at home mother to 8 children - 4 girls and 4 boys. I grew up in a home with a mother who was a professional cook and baker. There were always cakes, cookies, pies and other delicious treats in our home.I have almost 40 years of baking and cooking for my family. I am well know to my friends and family, as well as members of my community, as a person who is well versed in food sensitivites/allergies. I am able to make suggestions and help others deal with their food issues.

It has been a life long dream of mine to create a business in the food industry. Having developed my flour blend is helping realize my dream. Actually, I think it has gone a step beyond my original idea because it is not just any food product. It is a product that helps people who are experiencing various food sensitivities. Another bonus to my business is that, although I was not intending that my products would be organic, once I found everything I needed, they were organic. In essence, we have a product that is free of additives; has nothing refined in it; is organic as well as gluten free; and the results are delicious treats and snacks.

I, Nadine Sturko, am  Gail's sister and partner in this business. I have a BEd and have taught Elementary School in Edmonton for 22 years. Like Gail I have many (50+) years cooking and baking for my family. I have 3 sons who are now grown and have blessed me with 14 grand children. My husband passed away in 1991 and since that time I have learned a lot about dealing with life as a single person, mother, and grandmother.. 

I left teaching in 2001 and worked in the financial industry for 16 years. I retired at the end of 2016 and thought I would just enjoy that phase of my life. But ... my sister, Gail, asked me to help her with her new business idea. What could I say? She is my little sister and I have always looked out for her since she was born. So there went retirement and I am now co-owner of Gail's Worry Free Baking. 

My role here is mostly administrative but since we are presently preparing our mixes by hand, I am very involved with that process as well. I also am helping to create recipes for delicious food that can be made with Gail's Worry Free flour blen. These recipes will be made into a cook book that we hope to have ready in the fall of this year.

Getting Started

Early in 2019, we ordered our flour blend from a company in the USA. When it arrived, about 1/3 of it was damaged - NOT how you want to start out!

We decided that the best route was to package baking mixes. Gail's daughter, Maraquitta, is very artisitic and she created our first image for our packaging. It was a very cute cartoon of a cookie. From there we chose about 10 different recipes that we thought would make good mixes. Maraquitta made more of her cartoon pictures for each of the mixes as we needed them.

Then we rented a commercial kitchen and got to work.

We had our first sales in July when we started to participate in Farmers Markets in the Edmonton area and in Lethbridge. Our mixes were very well received and customers commented on the quality, texture and taste of our samples.

We participated in a Gluten Free Expo in Calgary in October and another one in Vancouver in January. We have been growing our business over the past 8 months and are looking forward to finding more retailers who will be willing to carry our product. We will continue to market our mixes in Farmers Markets again this summer as well as doing some trade shows.

We are on our way up and hopefully this BoostR will be a big hand in helping us move forward.

We sell on Amazon, so that is an option. Lakeview Bakery, in Calgary, has some of our mixes. They are also available in Oliver Health Foods in Lethbridge. We are looking for more vendors. We will post new locations on FB and Instagram once they become available.
