Edmonton Art Club - A Legacy of Art, 1921 - 2021

Edmonton Art Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year!

Officially established in 1921 with fourteen Charter Members, the Edmonton Art Club ("EAC”) is the oldest continuing art organization in Alberta.  It has been instrumental in helping to lay the foundation for the development of the visual arts in our province.

The Edmonton Art Club is a professional association for visual artists with a mandate to promote the visual arts through exhibitions, education, special projects and arts advocacy.  We are a Canadian organization, administered by a volunteer executive council of artists, providing a meeting place for artists of all levels, both professional and non-professional.  It is an environment of artists gathering to explore creativity. We are inclusive, dynamic and diverse.  Friendships are established, information is shared, opinions and ideas are exchanged in a supportive environment.

The club is a leader in the community offering educational opportunities, open studio days, workshops and demonstrations in all media for its members and non members. Additionally, a monthly critique of members artwork by accredited critics is offered.

The Edmonton Art Club knows that our strength lies not only in the words we stand by, but most importantly through the actions of our initiatives.  We also understand how important it is for our members to gather in just the right environment, and that is what we strive to provide at the Edmonton Art Club.

We welcome all artists! If you’re looking for a place that nurtures your artistic journey, look no further: we’re here and we can’t wait to see what you can create.

The Edmonton Art Club has been busy during this past year of Covid enforced isolation.  We've been around for a century and we won't let anything hold us back from sharing our art with you and encouraging all artists to take pride in being creative. Thirty nine members were involved in a special project in 2020 that will be revealed this year (2021).

Meet the Team

Sharon Bongers

Sharon Bongers

President

I have been a member of The Edmonton Art Club for 5 years approximately.

Drawing is my happy place, and I enjoy drawing animals, pencil is my preferred medium. While I was in my working stage, I used drawing to settle myself, bring myself back to centre. I didn’t have time to seriously think about Art, knowing it would be there when I was ready.

Joining the Art club has given me a place to do my Art, seriously. Although, with COVID I am aware of a kind of halting weight that is impeding my spirit. I am finding being a member of this club draws my spirit back up, to carry on. Trying new things in a supportive atmosphere is good too!

I’ve been a member of the Edmonton Art Club for 3 ½ years and especially enjoy the monthly critiques that help us all improve our artwork. Without the feedback during Covid, I lost interest in art for a while, but that is coming back now that the end is in sight. Watercolours are my medium of choice, although I also dabble in acrylics and ink.

Connie Clarke

Treasurer

I have been a member of the Edmonton Art Club for 5 years, now.  I am a watercolourist and soft pastel painter. As well, I am a graphic designer and I love to design logos and websites and dabble in the digital arts.

Through my paintings of gardens, landscapes and animals, I try to portray the fragile connection between humankind and nature.

I have become good friends with many of the EAC members and I thrive in the supportive and creative environment, becoming a better artist with every painting I create.

Being “locked in” due to Covid has given me the time needed to refine my skills and develop my own style.

Our club has really pulled together and become stronger against all odds.

This will be my third year with the Edmonton Art Club. I like to paint in oils although I have used Acrylics. It's important that I convey stories in the images I produce, and I aim for some kind of impressionistic style as well. Membership in the EAC has helped me grow as an artist, through contact with other artists, opportunities to enter shows, and being able to listen to the valuable feedback afforded to us each time our work is critiqued. The COVID situation has not really affected me much artistically as I feel that I am still learning just the same as before.

Rhea Jansen

Rhea Jansen

Past President

As an active member of the Edmonton Art Club since 2011, I have enjoyed helpful critiques at monthly meetings and participated in group exhibitions and workshops. A very important benefit is getting to know and learning from other artists. Although I have worked in oils, acrylics and alcohol inks, my favourite medium is watercolour for its luminosity and immediacy, especially for florals. In my paintings I try to capture a mood or a moment in time, using colour and shape to portray my interpretation of what I see for the viewer to enjoy. During the pandemic the Edmonton Art Club has met using Zoom but we could not conduct workshops or meet in person. This lack of fellowship has been the greatest loss. Although I should have spent more time painting while in seclusion at home, I found that my response to the crisis was not fight or flight but freeze. Thankfully now, a year later, I am spending more time in my studio again.
