What is chicory?

Chicory scientific name: Cichorium intybus L.

You’ve probably eaten chicory greens before in a salad. Radicchio, endive, escarole and frisée are all varieties of chicory leaves valued for their antioxidants and nutrients.

Chicory drink is made from the root section of the chicory vegetable.  A super food plant that that contains the highest amount of inulin of any food.

Sown in the spring, it is harvested six months later when the root, having reached its maturity, and is filled with inulin (a dietary fiber).

Roasted chicory root is a popular coffee alternative because chicory tastes similar to coffee.

What is baobab powder?

Baobab scientific name: Adansonia digitate.

Baobab fruit powder occurs naturally as a completely dry powder. It undergoes no spray-drying or freeze-drying. Unlike other fruits, the pulp inside is naturally dry. It is 100% natural raw fruit.  The Baobab powder production process involves separating the fruit powder from the rest of the contents of the pod. Baobab is a gluten-free, highly alkalizing, low-glycemic index food. Baobab powder is a superfruit with one of the most nutrients in superfruits category.

The Baobab Tree

Baobab is the common name for Adansonia. There are nine species, the one in mainland Africa being Adansonia digitata.

The trees reach heights of 5 to 30 meters (16 to 98 ft) and trunk diameters of 7 to 11 meters (23 to 36 ft). Its trunk can hold up to 120,000 liters of water. For most of the year, the tree is leafless, and looks very much like it has its roots sticking up in the air, hence their other name “upside down trees”.

Baobabs live well over a thousand years as attested by radio-carbon dating. There is every reason to believe that certain baobabs are far older still, but these ancient trees are invariably hollow – the oldest wood at the center having disintegrated to create a cavity.

Baobabs are found in multiple sub-Saharan Africa countries – and in Madagascar and Australia – so Senegal cannot really claim this tree 100%, still it’s found throughout the country and is very emblematic here.
