Campaign Description

Help Trapcity bring a pair of world class hip hop albums to fruition by assisting us in reaching our funding goals in order to cover the final phase of our campaigning process.

Trapcity

Trapcity is an independent record label founded in 2017 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. StR8 GUttA is a conscious gangsta rapper ready to release his sophomore album, HMV. His counterpart, Ella Favela, is a neo-soul artist prepared to release her debut album, Five Feet Tall & Bulletproof.

We believe in quality over quantity, and have had the good fortune of working with other local leaders in their respective fields, including Chubbs (Soundproof Studios), DJ Nato (Up In Arms Studio), Sonik (Sonik Hip Hop), and Andrew Smyth (A. Smyth Productions). We have spent the past few years perfecting these projects, and we've come as far as is humanly possible for us to on our own. We need your help to bring these projects to their final phase of completion, with music in your ears (and hands)!

COVID-19

Directly prior to the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Trapcity was slated to open for Onyx and Fatlip & Slimkid3 (of the Pharcyde) as a part of the release campaign for HMV and Five Feet Tall & Bulletproof. Obviously and unfortunately, that didn't happen. The pandemic presented the entire world with an unprecedented set of financial and logistic challenges, all of which directly affected us professionally and personally. We were essentially forced into a standstill, during which we took the opportunity to re-evaluate our business plan, and plot a brand new course of action to support our albums launching successfully, given this new set of circumstances.

Trapcity is committed to the overall health and safety of ourselves and our fans at all times, and we look forward to rising to these new challenges as they shift and arise. As of today (June 18, 2021), both StR8 GUttA and Ella Favela have received their first vaccinations, and await their second doses eagerly. As it stands, we have yet to book our first live performance since lockdown; however, we are currently exploring responsible options with venue owners and booking agents that we know personally, and whom we trust fully. Everything about how these albums are coming to market is completely different from what it was even just a year ago; however, we are devoted to masking up, sanitizing, socially distancing, and enjoying live, local music with you all, for many years to come.

How You Can Help

By committing to our rewards at any level, you can help us to finish the process of releasing two one-of-a-kind tribute albums, Five Feet Tall & Bulletproof, and HMV. Both albums were recorded in Edmonton at Soundproof Studios, and mixed and mastered at Up In Arms Studio. Both albums were written, arranged, and performed in teir entirety by Ella Favela and StR8 GUttA, respectively.

The first half of the funds we raise through BoostR will be put towards manufacturing the merchandise packs for every tier, as well as a physical and digital press run. We intend to be visible on local, national, and international platforms, including CBC Radio Canada, CKUA, CJSR, Hip Hop Canada, and Worldstar Hip Hop, among others. Marketing is crucial, and will be the major point of our focus moving forward towards our goals. The second half of the funds raised will be used to cover the remaining mixing and mastering balances, cover art, and guest appearances of various artists. Additionally, we will need to cover the cost of submitting our music for consideration at awards shows including Breakout West and The Junos, in multiple categories.

We are passionate about sharing our art with the world, and dedicated to giving Alberta hip hop a global voice. We can't thank you enough for your continued support - and trust us, we've only just begun...

Str8 Gutta

In 2015, I released my first single, Canadian Crippler, followed by my debut album, Last in Line, in 2018. During that time, I took part in XXL Magazine's Canada's Cream of the Crop Cypher, which turned into two appearances in the magazine itself. I have done over one hundred shows in Edmonton and surrounding area, which gave way to co-headlining the LSD Tour with Doom $quad in 2017.

From talent buying to promotions, selling tickets, bookings, artist management, and et cetera, I have been involved in every aspect of this industry at some point in time. These days, the focus is solely on my art form - releasing the Sam The Record Man Mixtape in 2018 was just the beginning! Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our industry has been put on life support, but we still have a few tricks up our sleeves...

HMV

I wrote HMV when I was incarcerated, which made the album writing process very challenging. Hearing the radio on our unit every day; however, had me listening to what urban music sounded like today, in the here and now.

On this album, I chose to get all of the production from out of town, in order to capture a different sound - how wanted it to really sound. This project was centered more around musicality than it was around over-the-top lyricism. Unlike Last In Line,  HMV is an LP for the people!

I enjoyed the challenge of exploring a wide range of emotions while writing this project. It led me to the presentation of a much more vulnerable, introspective side of myself. Introducing: an underground king with a mainstream dream...

Ella Favela

My name is Ella Favela, and I am a neo-soul artist living and working in Edmonton, Alberta. I have been a vocalist since 1997, when I joined my first school hymnal choir. We performed weekly at school assemblies, and competed at Kiwanis Music Festival in Calgary yearly. My love of singing grew exponentially over the years alongside my contralto belt, and I've had the good fortune to perform on a wide variety of stages for a diverse number of crowds as a member of choirs, a cappella groups, and stage show casts.

In addition to performing, I am a devoted lover of most genres of music. My mother has extensive knowledge of (and, to be fair, exquisite taste in) rock music of all subgenres, jazz, classical, samba, and bossa nova. My late father was passionate about disco (yes, seriously), big band, classical, and prog. My baby brother is a gifted rock drummer. I grew up in the golden era of the MTV generation, spending my chilhood memorizing music video choreography, and my angsty youth cycling between shock rock, industrial, and hip hop, primarily.

I consider myself a humble guest at this table, and look forward to the opportunity to earn myself a more permanent seat. Five Feet Tall & Bulletproof is so much more than just an album. At its core, it is a tribute to my father's memory, and a piece of my heart and soul. I am absolutely elated to be sharing it with you all, very soon.

5 Feet Tall & Bulletproof

I met my partner, StR8 GUttA, in the summer of 2016. He came into Tuffhouse Studios, where I was working at the time as the editor-in-chief of TuffUrban Magazine. After I had the pleasure of interviewing him, he realized that i could; in fact, hold down a freestyle rap cypher - and also, that I could sing. From there, we became business partners, when he brought me on at Trapcity as an artist, and in an administrative role.

I lost my father suddenly and unexpectedly in September 2016 after he was hit by a truck while crossing the road in a marked pedestrian crossing. He spent a month in the ICU and endured a genuinely tragic end to his life. My father was exceptional in every way, and although I've been estranged from  my family for a majority of my adult life, that loss absolutely crushed me.  I am truly grateful to StR8 GUttA for challenging me to write 5 Feet Tall & Bulletproof as a healthy way to process the grief that was threatening to consume me.

My father moved to Canada from Brasil in 1988 with nothing but a dream and more tenacity than any one man should ever possess. When he passed away, he had just moved to Texas with my mother to pursue his dream position as Principal Scientist at the Heat Transfer Research Institute. My dad disagreed with a majority of my life choices; however, we were twins in so many ways. In this instance, I used my inheritance to produce my debut body of work - he did, after all, teach me to take bold, calculated risks and to present my most authentic self to the world.

I have been entirely humbled and completely transformed by this journey, and I've come to the point where I've done as much as I can on my own. My dad also taught me to ask for help, and that's where you come in. I sincerely hope that you will come along on this journey with us. It's going to be a hell of a ride...

Meet the Team

StR8 GUttA

StR8 GUttA

Artist

StR8 GUttA's music is undeniably hardcore hip-hop; from boom bap, to G-funk, to trap and back again. Working alongside the legend himself, Chubbs, of Soundproof Studios, and the infamous DJ Nato, the official engineer of Merkules over at Up In Arms Studios, it is safe to say the quality StR8 GUttA brings to the table speaks for itself.

Ella Favela

Artist

Ella Favela is a Canadian neo-soul musician, visual artist, muse, yogi, writer, and spiritualist living and working in Edmonton, Alberta. Polished yet progressive, her unique style reflects her love of all music, from choral, musical, jazz, punk, industrial, alternative, prog, hip hop, r&b, and nearly everything else in-between. She is a foundational member of Trapcity, and has had great fun growing her vocal career ever since taking the stage for the first time at Calgary Kiwanis Festival, 1997.

Her forthcoming debut release, 5 Feet Tall & Bulletproof, is a memorial release dedicated to her late father, who passed away following a freak accident in September 2016. 5 Feet Tall & Bulletproof is a neo-soul offering featuring Str8 Gutta, Eternia, King Kashmere, DJ Frosty, and the engineering genius of Nato Down. It was brought to life independent of outside influence or contribution, and came to be following the utter devastation of losing an estranged (yet beloved) parent. Ella hopes to encapsulate the authentic experience of transformative loss that has led her to this very moment in time.

Ella hopes to inspire, unite, and empower her audience with a truthful, well articulated message, and consistent efforts to be exceptional - both on and off the microphone. She is currently working on a handful of new projects to follow 5 Feet Tall and Bulletproof, and is humbled daily by your continued support.
