HELP US REACH OUR NEW GOAL OF $50K!
We started this campaign with the goal of $20K, because no one on BoostR had ever raised much more than that before. We knew that we would need to raise $50K in order to really make things happen for a Spring 2017 opening, but we felt it would be too bold, obnoxious even, to set a goal higher than anyone has ever reached before on this platform. Our customers in Edmonton have humbled us even further with your overwhelming support. You have said to us "you can do this, and we are going to make it happen". We are so full of gratitude for your support. You have moved us to make an offer to lease a space that we are thoroughly excited about, and we think you will love it too.
Will it help motivate you to help us reach our Stretch Goal of $50K if we add an extra reward? If we reach $50K by October 27th, every new and returning Cake Club Member gets a Great Big Coffee Mug. Everyone that has contributed an amount more than a Cake Club Membership also gets a Great Big Coffee Mug. Help us get there! Tell your friends why you've contributed to this campaign, and help us spread the word.
Sugared & Spiced has a single focus: baking. Our goods are crafted by hand, from quality ingredients, one by one or in small batches. Our customers can expect better flavour without shortcuts. We operate Cake Club - 3 cakes a year on your dates, delivered to you when you need them. Once we open our storefront this Spring, we will offer a variety of unique grab-and-go pastries and coffee in addition to special order cakes and desserts.
Sugared & Spiced started as a table full of cookies at the Highlands Farmers Market. Our family knew how good Amy’s cookies were, but we didn’t realize the whole neighbourhood would be so impressed. After that first Summer experiment, Amy signed up for the Baking Certificate program at NAIT to see what else she could do.
After a year at NAIT – Amy dreamed of her own little bake shop, and decided she didn’t want work at a place that took shortcuts or made the exact same thing day after day. So she continued to develop her cookie recipes and began to look for the right kitchen and the best customers.
For three years, she’s been working to show people what the Sugared & Spiced Baked Goods difference is. She developed the original dessert/pastry selection for a local French Café to rave reviews (http://weirdwildandwonderful.ca/cafe-bicyclette-restaurant-review-just-say-oui/), earned a spot on the Tomato’s Top 100 Best Things to Eat and Drink in Edmonton (http://thetomato.ca/top-100/the-4th-annual-top-100) 3 times without having a shop/restaurant or even a farmer’s market stall, and opened a subscription Cake Club with a limit of 50 members but sold 100 in the first year (www.yegcake.club). People in Edmonton who REALLY love food already know that you won’t be disappointed with a cake or pastry or cookie from Sugared & Spiced.
The Sugared & Spiced product line and services have grown a lot over the last 4 years, we’ve operated out of several commercial kitchens, moving from time to time in order to accommodate our growth. We continue to grow month by month, and this Spring we hit a point where we have had to start turning down orders. Every day there are requests or orders that we have to turn down because we’re at capacity.
And we get two types of questions all the time:
1. When are you going to open more spots in Cake Club??
2. Where are you located? Do you have a shop where I can come buy stuff?
The next step in this project is to open our own storefront bake shop; to put down roots in a permanent storefront space.
Why are we crowdfunding?
There are a variety of sources of funding for the biggest expenses of building and opening a bake shop. Our projected revenue will cover the amortized expense of leasehold improvements and equipment purchases. And we’ve gone as far as we can with design and planning processes without spending a lot of money upfront. In order to move forward we need to commit to a location, and right now, we need a cash injection to cover things like a lease deposit and all kinds of design work. A successful crowdfunding campaign will give us the boost we need to keep moving forward and keep us on track for a Spring opening.
We are planning to make a lease offer on a space this Fall with an estimated possession date of Dec. 1, and estimated store opening date of February - April. We anticipate costs of roughly $200,000 to get opened, and we're aiming to raise 10% of that through crowdfunding.
What will you get?
Our concept is an adaptation of a variety of small bake shops that we’ve visited in cities throughout Canada and the US.
- You will get a highly walkable location in a mixed use building.
- You will get a small bake shop where customers are part of the family.
- You will get to feel the warmth and love that we share through fresh, made from scratch baked goods.
- You will get a uniquely Edmonton kind of place with delicious and beautiful things that you just won’t find anywhere else.
- You will get the kind of place where you stop in to pick up a dozen danishes for the office and stay a few minutes to watch the bakers in action.
- You will get the place you go to find a pastry that you’ve never tried before.
- You will get the spot you’ve booked for your girls’ night out to learn how to decorate a damn fine three-layer cake.
- You will get the reason you can’t wait for your next birthday.
This business brings us great enjoyment because it brings everyone else great enjoyment. This is everything to us, and we want to share it with you.
In Spring of 2017, with your help, we plan to open a great little storefront space where we can continue to offer (an expanded) Cake Club, custom cakes, and catering, as well as a full line of baked goods and coffee to go, and a space where we can offer baking classes/parties. Sugared & Spiced Baked Goods is committed to being a small batch, bake-from-scratch operation, where nothing is pre-mixed before it hits our kitchen and where you know your baker.
